Carol MutesiCarol Mutesi, local affiliate tour guide, is a native Ugandan. Her passion for tourism and travel grew when she joined her high schools’ Wildlife Club. The club left her with memorable experiences of Uganda’s natural resources and taught her to protect and conserve wildlife and the environment. Carol received a degree in tourism management from Makerere University - Kampala in 2005. Shortly after, she began working with Explore Uganda Safaris. To deepen her knowledge of the global tourism industry, she completed a diploma course in travel and tourism in 2006. Carol is a strong advocate for eco-tourism and responsible tourism, enjoys bird-watching, and speaks Luganda, English, and Kiswahili.
Ihla Hooyer From 1984 to 1990, Ihla Hooyer lived in Arua, Uganda, where she worked with the Church of Uganda to support local children and women. Ihla helped begin a tutoring center and taught English at a nursery school while raising a child from the village and operating a home with no running water and access to solar-powered electricity for a couple of hours a day. Since 1990, Ihla has returned to Africa many times, leading tours four times, traveling, visiting service projects, and maintaining connections with lifelong friends. In 2000, Ihla served as the interim operator of a guest house in Laboa, Uganda. Ihla has been a vital advisor to Ujuzi African Travel.
Philistia BiletiPhilistia Bileti was born in Uganda and has lived there her entire life. She has raised four children – Emmanuel, 26; Lydia, 24; Daniel, 21; and Andrew, 19 – in Arua, Uganda. Philistia is a primary school teacher at Arua Demonstration School. Her volunteer work includes teaching Sunday school, serving as an executive committee member of the Church of Uganda Diocesan Mothers’ Union, and serving as leader of the women’s group of the Madi and West Nile Diocese and its head lay representative to the diocesan council. She helped start the Mothers’ Union chapter in 1989. Its main projects include supporting a nursery school, community guesthouse, tree-planting project, and tailoring school. Her interests include working with women and children, providing counseling, and singing. Philistia has coordinated the cultural and service activities for the Arua portion of the tour. Additionally, she will host the tour during their stay in Arua.
